We are very sad to inform you all that our beloved Genius, Gentleman and Mischievous Schoolboy John Scholes passed away in the early hours of Monday February 18th.

John’s technical and personal contributions to Dyalog over the course of four decades can hardly be exaggerated, and we are devastated that he won’t be coming in to the office again. However, we rejoice in his achievements and consider ourselves blessed to have the privilege of building upon his work. We are also very happy that he had the pleasure of seeing some of his most important ideas come to fruition, and reflect upon them (dfns: Past, Present and Future from Dyalog ’18 in Belfast: https://dyalog.tv/Dyalog18/?v=y33XDD6ANt0).

There will be a funeral at Caversham, and the APL community will be collecting memories of and tributes to John on a web site. Further information regarding both will be forwarded when available; if you would like to contribute words to the web site, please send them to memories@dyalog.com until the page is live.

UPDATE: The tribute website for John is now available: see http://johnscholes.rip/. John’s family welcome donations in his name to the British Lung Foundation.
