Unfortunately, our colleagues at MicroAPL have decided to withdraw from the APL market, essentially due to the end of life of components they are using to deliver a cross-platform IDE and GUI applications. MicroAPL Ltd. continues to exist but has decided to focus on their highly successful porting tool business (customers include Dyalog Ltd).

MicroAPL APLX for Windows

The relationship between APL vendors has always been an interesting mixture of competition and collaboration. We have frequently been impressed and inspired by the power and simplicity of features that have been added to APLX (and APL68000 before it), and recently we have also had the pleasure of direct co-operation on the design of ⎕XML, which both systems have implemented.

We are saddened to lose these valuable contributions to the APL community, but honoured to have been asked to help reduce the impact of this decision. We have entered into an agreement with MicroAPL as follows:

  • APLX is no longer available from MicroAPL. Instead, Dyalog is hosting an APLX page from which the existing Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit, MacOS and Linux versions of APLX will continue to be downloadable free of charge on an ‘as-is’ basis.
  • Dyalog is hosting the final versions of APLX documentation and online help pages.
  • Dyalog has taken over maintenance of the APLX Forums. A section on migration from APLX to Dyalog APL has been created within the Dyalog Forums at http://www.dyalog.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=37.
  • Dyalog has no formal obligation to provide any form of support for APLX, and does not have access to the APLX source code, but will endeavour to monitor both forums and provide assistance as best we can.
  • APLX users are encouraged to contact Dyalog to discuss eventually migrating their applications to Dyalog APL so as to ensure the long-term future of their APL code bases.

Questions related to our role in preserving APLX, and any other assistance that we can provide to APLX users, should be directed to aplx@dyalog.com.
